1st Regiment, Indian Home Guards, Kansas Infantry



Historical notes HISTORICAL NOTES:
The First Indian Home Guard Regiment was a tri-racial Union regiment first organized in Kansas in May 1862. The regiment was made up of Creek and Seminole Indians, African Creeks and African Seminoles with white officers commanding the unit. It was organized at Leroy, Kansas, May 22, 1862. It mustered out May 31, 1865. Officers OFFICERS:

Sent to Indian Territory January, 1863, and occupy line of the Arkansas River to protect friendly Indians, with Headquarters at Fort Gibson, I. T., and Fort Smith, Ark., until May, 1865. Action at Bentonville, Ark., February 20, 1863. Fort Blount April 30 and May 20. Fort Gibson, Cherokee Nation, May 22 and 25. Fort Blount June 9. Operations about Fort Gibson June 16-20. Greenlief Prairie June 16. Cabin Creek July 1-2. Elk Creek, near Honey Springs, July 17. Cabin Creek July 20. Creek Agency October 15 and 25. Repulse of Quantrell's attack on Fort Gibson December 16. Near Sheldon Place. Barren Fork, December 18. Operations in Indian Territory February 1-21, 1864. Cabin Creek September 19. Expedition from Fort Gibson to Little River and Hillabee March 18-20, 1865. Mustered out May 31, 1865. ROSTERS:
The rosters of this unit contains the name of 3240 men.

Companies "A" and "B" were Seminole Indian companies and companies "C" through "K" were Creek Indian companies.
