Georgia 11th Artillery Battalion



HISTORICAL NOTES: Georgia 11th Artillery Battalion was also known as the Sumter Battalion. It was organized in the spring of 1862 with 5 companies and later reduced to 3. It was formed from the independent companies commanded by Captains Cutts, Price, Crawford and Blackshear, by S.O. 118, A&IGO (23 May 1862).

The 11th Artillery Battalion fought with the Army of Northern Virginia from the Maryland Campaign to Cold Harbor. During the Petersburg siege, the battalion served south of the James River and served as infantry during the Appomattox campaign. In October, 1862, the battalion had 450 effectives, 384 at Gettysburg, but only 44 present at the Appomattox surrender.
