War History of Company C - The Sixth Georgia Infantry Regiment

Under the Stars and Bars
- Wendell D. Croom
A History of
The GA 6th Infantry Regiment with roster

From the preface...

In presenting this little work, the writer has not aimed at historic distinction, nor has he been swayed by principles of prejudice, or avarice; but has, at the request of the survivors of the Company of which he has the honor to have been a member, endeavored to compend in as brief and concise a manner as the nature of circumstances would allow, a graphic account of each member of the Company, together with a general out-line of its War-History. He indulges the hope that the work will meet with favorable reception at the hands of the friends of the company, and of a generous public, and that if any errors or over-sights should be found in it, that they will be passed as unintentional. He hereby tenders his acknowledgments to those of the survivors who so generously contributed to accelerate his labors by placing within his reach, much of the important data connected with the work. The work is respectfully dedicated to the memory of the Confederate dead who staked their lives, their fortunes, and their sacred honor, and poured out their life-blood upon the altar of their country, in defense of the cause that severed the Federal Compact, and led to the late terrible war between the States of the Federal Union.

WENDELL D. CROOM.

Croom published this first hand account in 1878. We have added rosters and compiled service records of the Georgia 6th Infanty Regiment. The original book was 97 pages in length. This edition with the rosters is 253 pages.

Company C, the Beauregard Volunteers was from Fort Valley, Houston County. Other companies were from Hancock, Dade, Butts, Crawford, Mitchell, Taylor, Baker, Twiggs, and Oglethorps counties.

The first Confederate unit mustered from the state of Georgia, the Sixth Regiment was organized at Atlanta in May 1861. Alfred Colquitt was elected the first colonel of the unit.

This regiment followed an unusual path through the war, going first to Virginia, but missing Gettysburg because they were transferred to Charleston, SC. The 6th Georgia was immortalized as one of the units defending Battery Wagner in the film, “Glory.”

They were sent to Florida to participate in Ocean Pond (Olustee), then back to Virginia for the post-Gettysburg battles. When Sherman threatened the Carolinas, the 6th was sent back to the Carolinas and participated in the campaign there, surrendering at Greensboro, NC.
We publish more than 200 books and DVDs to aid in Georgia research. This catalog is arranged by topic to help you find books of interest. You may also search by key word by clicking on the Search Tab above.
