Brief History of the Thirtieth Georgia Regiment

The Thirtieth Georgia Infantry served until the spring of 1863 in the department of South Carolina, Georgia and Florida; then went to Mississippi and became a part of the brigade of Col. C. C. Wilson. It served under him at Chickamauga, soon after which he was promoted to brigadier general. After his death in November, 1863, the Thirtieth was consolidated with the Georgia 29th Infantry Regiment and assigned to the brigade of General Stevens, of Walker's division. It served through the Atlanta, Tennessee and Carolina campaigns, surrendering with Johnston near Goldsboro.

These men witnessed first hand the destruction Sherman's troops wreaked on their own homes and families. Many of the men were from the Atlanta area, and the one's from Campbell and Fayette counties returned to find their wives and children had been shipped north, many never to be heard from again. Three companies were from Campbell county, and this area of west Atlanta was so decimated that the county was not able to recover and even today the "dry gulch" area is largely undeveloped.
